March 2008

For Teachers and Parents
We’re grateful to be celebrating the 40th year of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on public television. And we couldn’t be doing that without the caring support those who care for and care about young children.

And so we thank you.

We hope you’re celebrating right along with us because you’re very much a part of this anniversary. Just as parents need children in order to be parents and teachers need someone to teach in order to be teachers, we need you so that we can be who we are. Thank you for caring about our Neighborhood.

Although episodes of our series have been produced over several decades, parents and professionals continue to tell us that our calm pace and focus on emotional and social concerns are more important today than ever before. Fred often reminded us: "While the outsides of children’s lives have changed over the years, their insides have not changed! Children’s basic needs remain the same – to know that they are loved, to be able to deal with their feelings in constructive ways, to develop self-control, and to accept and appreciate other people in this world."

We hope you’ll find the resources here on our Family Communication website as well as those on our PBS site helpful to you and the children in your care.

GOING AWAY & COMING BACK
Helping Children with Times of Separation
Why do people go away? How does it feel to miss someone you love? How does it feel when you and that someone are back together again? Mister Rogers helps children talk and play about their sad and angry feelings when loved ones go away, as they're learning to trust that those people will come back.
