Activity Idea
Here’s a comfort toy that children can make themselves. We call it a “Softee.”
“When Your Baby Cries” DVD shows some of the ways we can comfort infants, but of course older children need comfort too. At times like that, you have many ways to comfort them-- talking in a caring tone, offering your lap or giving a hug. For some children, it can also help to have a soft toy to cuddle with, like this “Softee.“
Materials:
- Old pillowcase (s) - to make one for each child or one for the group
- Stuffing materials (clean rags, old clothes)
- Yarn or string
- Colored markers
- Fabric scraps, etc.
- Glue or needle and thread

You can help the children make a “Softee” by filling an old pillowcase with soft stuffing materials. When the children have helped you fill the pillowcase, tie the end closed with a piece of yarn or string. You might want to tie some yarn or string around the middle to make a “waist” or around the corners to make “ears” or “feet.” Do the children have ideas for decorating the stuffed toy -- drawing with markers or gluing (or sewing) on fabric scraps or yarn? When it’s finished, “Softee” can be a good toy to cuddle with at a time when a child needs some comfort.
