Activity Idea
Granola Gifts
(from Mister Rogers' Plan & Play Book)
Food and caring go hand in hand. Here's an easy food gift for children to make as a way of saying "thank you" to the people who help them.
Materials:
Plain packaged granola or make your own
Raisins
Chopped dried fruit
Sesame seeds
Chopped nuts
Bowls
Spoons or scoops
small plastic bags
Ribbon or yarn
Paper
Tape
If you have enough bowls to go around, let each child mix his or her own batch of granola, adding chopped fruit, nuts, raisins, and seeds. Once the mixing is done, the children can spoon the granola into small plastic bags, saving a little for themselves. Bright yarn or ribbon tied around the top of each bag makes a festive package. Can the children think of people who might enjoy receiving their granola gifts? You can help them write those names on pieces of paper and tape them to the granola packages. You might want to use this time for talking about the feelings we have when we give something to someone else.
