The Environment - recycling

Looking for ways to talk with young children about caring for the environment?  On this program, Mister Rogers visits a recycling center and talks about taking care of our planet in ways that young children can understand.  After the Make-Believe story that illustrates the problem of too much garbage, he shows children some ways of using recycled materials as playthings.

Parenting tip: Use empty plastic milk cartons as bins for storing crayons or small toys by cutting off the tops and covering the cut edges with masking tape.

Description:
Caring for the environment is part of being a caring neighbor, and children learn from our example.  Mister Rogers and Mr. McFeely sort their recyclables and take them to a recycling center to see what happens to discarded bottles and cans.  In Make-Believe there are garbage cans everywhere and all the dumps are full, so the neighbors decide to recycle.  Back in his television house, Mister Rogers shows some ways of caring for the environment by building with blocks made from recycled wood and finding new uses for old cardboard tubes.
