Mister Rogers' Daniel Striped Tiger ringtoneDaniel Tiger Goes Hi-Tech

King Friday has fanfares, X and Hen have a bell, Trolley has a whistle – and now Daniel has a ringtone you can download to your cell phone!  It’s part of T. Foley’s unique public art project called Locally Toned, a not-for-profit venture inviting Pittsburghers to create original ringtones that are provided free through the Web and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). The art work performs itself when Locally Toned participants receive calls on their cell phones.

Joanne Rogers plays Daniel Striped Tiger ringtone

We came up with the idea of having everyone’s favorite Make-Believe puppet Daniel Striped Tiger represent us.  In his blog interview with T. Foley, Daniel explained his choice, of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” for the ringtone. ”It reminds me of all the caring neighbors and great neighborhoods right here in Pittsburgh!...It’s played on an instrument called a celeste.  It’s kind of like a piano, but its notes are softer and higher — just right for a shy tiger like me.  So because Mrs. Rogers is a pianist, I thought it would be fun for her to play it and for you to hear it!”

Download this musical treat that brings back all those good feelings of the Neighborhood every time your phone rings. If you’re curious about the complete interview with Daniel Tiger and Mrs. Rogers, click here for T. Foley’s blog.

The goals of the Locally Toned project are technological empowerment, community service and the substitution of a system of shared creativity for one of commerce (the distribution of music industry ringtones). The project was realized and supported within deeplocal’s Old and New Media Residency program (with additional support from co-host http://www.encyclopediadestructica.com/.
