ASCAP Honors the Television Work of Fred Rogers
This past December the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers honored the musical creativity of Fred Rogers by presenting a special award at the organization's 41st Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City.
The award posthumously honored Fred Rogers and, in particular, for interweaving his original music with dialogue to underscore his message on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. People sometimes find it surprising that Fred Rogers thought of himself first and foremost as a musician, having written the words and music for more than 200 songs. Many of his Neighborhood songs are available on CD.
The ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards program recognizes books, articles, broadcasts and web sites on the subject of music selected for their excellence. The Awards were established in 1967 to honor the memory of composer/critic/commentator Deems Taylor who died in 1966 after a distinguished career that included six years as President of ASCAP.
